People tend to stick it out until another opportunity has been lined up before we resign. But is this really for the best? Understanding that we may be attached to the position for financial reasons is one thing, but sometimes it’s very important to just let go.

Pending the circumstances, if you don’t let go, you can easily destroy your career or worse, your health. Here are two scenarios when you should consider resigning even if you don’t have another job lined up:

  • When you believe something illegal or unethical is going on at work and you are concerned it will reflect badly on you;
  • When your current job is negatively affecting your health and your life outside of work.

It’s good practice to continually review your working situation. After all, we spend a significant amount of our life at work or working. Before you quit, however, you need to put together a plan that includes when and how you are going to resign, whom you are going to use as references and most importantly—what you are going to say about why you are resigning.

You can almost guarantee that a prospective employer will ask why you decided to move on from your most recent company. This is why it’s so important to have a strategy before doing so. They also prefer to contact a referee from your previous company too.

If you choose to leave your job without another one lined up, I’d recommend following these steps:

  • Make a plan for how you are going to resign, to whom, and when exactly. Put it on your calendar. Who else needs to be told as soon as you have resigned? Think about what you will say about why you are leaving the company. Add that to your plan.
  • Find three good references for your work. At least one reference should be from your current employer. If you’d rather not ask your boss, try a colleague, direct report, or client.
  • Write a short resignation letter. It should include a compliment for your current employer and a credible new direction. Even if you plan to resign in person, take the letter to the meeting and give it to the person you are resigning to. Be sure not to blame anybody and keep the emotion to a minimum. It could come back to haunt you.
  • Follow through. The day after you resign is the first day of the rest of your career. It can be a daunting experience but keep in mind the reasons you resigned in the first place. No career is worth your health or your reputation when unethical behaviour of a company can overwhelm your future opportunities.
