Those who are open to change, willing to be pro-active, getting out of that dreaded comfort zone—are generally more successful.
These motivated individuals have one thing in common. They understand that in order to move ahead in their career, one has to be open to change.
Think for a minute about your career path. How did you get to where you are right now? Are you happy and satisfied with your career? Could it be improved? How open to change have you been in the past?
I challenge you to reach out to someone you admire or respect in terms of where they are in their career and ask some of those questions. You’ll find that most successful professionals will admit that they too were afraid of making a change and that changing this mindset is key to achieving your potential.
If you are afraid of making changes, be it something as simple as switching jobs or something as huge as changing your entire career, then keep reading, because I’m sharing some easy tips to change your thinking and to start welcoming change instead of fearing it.
Keep Learning
Never stop learning. Sounds simple? Because it is. If you feel that your degree or past education is sufficient to keep your skills relevant in the ever changing, fast-paced nature of the employment world—then you are mistaken. As the world becomes more inter-connected and the population grows, so does your competition.
Make an effort to learn things that make you better, improve your competency and reduce your competition. If you have relevant new skills that no one else does, that in itself, is a proven way to stand out and improve your career successes.
Challenge Your Limits
Ignore that negative self-talk and start putting things into action. Push yourself. This is the simplest way to change your thinking from the negative, to the positive. To get out of that rut and stop procrastinating. Look to taking on a new project. Explore new avenues. Get out into the “traffic” and leave the comfort zone behind. You’ll be amazed how being pro-active can change your whole mindset for the better.
Grow Your Professional Network
You don’t have to do this alone. Seek motivation from your friends, family, colleagues or a person that inspires you. An influencer. People are generally willing to help. Offer to shout them a coffee in exchange for picking their brain a bit about their career, the path that led them to where they are and what was their trigger for change.
Do you think that they would have achieved that success without having embraced change?
By following these simple steps you are being open to change and instead of fearing it, you are embracing it. You start to find change exciting as new opportunities present to you that never otherwise would have.
Every small step is leading you to your end goal to achieving a rewarding and satisfying career. Where procrastination is no longer one of your weaknesses, weighing you down and holding you back. Instead, it triggered positive change for you.
As a matter of fact, when asked what your weaknesses are in the interview process, you could mention this very topic, how you turned it around and how it is now considered a strength.
