How many times have you heard that word lately? It’s true that we’re in unprecedented uncertain times and while many businesses have stood down staff due to coronavirus, other employers are in urgent need of workers. So, where are these jobs I hear you ask?
Well the answer is – everywhere. Not very helpful, right? But bear with me here.
We’re in a pandemic and things have most certainly changed due to Covid-19, but did you know that roughly 70-80% of jobs are not even advertised? Have you ever heard of the ‘Hidden Job Market’? I assure you that it does exist and it is where most of the jobs are by a long country mile.
The job market can be likened to an iceberg where only 20-30% of its mass protrudes above the waterline – the visible market. However, the remaining 70-80% is out of sight but this is where the majority of the icebergs mass resides – the non-advertised market.
The most important factor to consider here is that the majority of jobseekers only target the visible market – the tip of the iceberg. That leaves out a significant portion of the market that you could be taking advantage of.
How do you find jobs in the non-advertised market especially considering the impact of corona virus?
Before I get into that I should first explain what the hidden job market actually is. The term can be slightly misleading in that it doesn’t refer to a vast ocean of job vacancies that has miraculously alluded you your entire career. Unfortunately, there isn’t rows and rows of empty desks and chairs waiting to be occupied. Rather the term actually refers to the mass of the iceberg below the waterline where change has not yet resulted in a need for a new position, person or skillset.
It could be that a company has been thinking of hiring a certain person/skillset for some time but has yet to become urgent (once urgent it transitions to the visible market) or the role may only be in the mind of one or two key decision makers. Maybe a key employee has tabled a retirement date. The solution could well be in the form of a person they have yet to meet or hear about. It is here, in the hidden job market where top level recruiters operate in and make a very substantial living from.
My number one tip to begin exploring the non-advertised market is to be pro-active and reach out to as many contacts, preferably decisions makers, in your relevant and suitable industry. Of course there are many strategies involved and techniques to utilise to improve your success rates during this type of activity. This can only come through extensive experience or training.
The benefits of the hidden job market encompass all of the benefits of the ‘reactive/visible market’ along with some great additional benefits such as little or no competition, no intermediaries, larger market, self-defining (it impresses to be proactive) and a marketing edge in that you can be seen differently and not just text on paper.
The hidden job market is a very powerful career strategy that if learned will be a lifelong skillset where you may never need to apply for a job, traditionally at least, ever again.
